In the business world, technology has evolved to improve operations in various industries over the years, and the scrap metal and recycling industry is no different. Years ago, many companies struggled with issues related to inventory management and control, compliance assurance and even customer service. The Senate is moving to make metal theft a federal crime, with the Judiciary Committee poised to take action later this week on a bill that would impose a 10-year prison sentence on anyone caught stealing metal from telephone or cell towers, highway equipment or other critical infrastructure. Copper theft is a particular problem, with the average annual price on global markets quadrupling over the past decade. The bill would also make it tougher to fence stolen metal by requiring more record-keeping for recycling agents, and prohibiting them from paying cash for purchases larger than $100.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, the Minnesota Democrat who wrote the bill, said metal theft has jumped more than 80 percent in recent years, and people have stolen from homes, churches ... read more

Scrap Yard Dog Junk YardWe've all had the horrible experience of running into Oscar The Grouch at the recycling center, salvage yard or junkyard; you name it - and finding that the scale master or buyer is clearly having a bad day. And it's not just a bit of a bad day: it's a realy no good, very horrible bad bad day. I don't know about you, but I've been known to make a graceful but hasty exit in cases like that; I just don't like selling to people who don't want to buy from me.

On the other hand, I've met scale masters / buyers whose energy and enthusiasm were so inspiring, I'd have sold them the wheels off my scrap mobile. Attitude, you see, is everything. Now, I don't want to discount knowledge, persistence, a grea... read more

NORTH DAKOTA SCRAP LAWS

North Dakota has become the 49th state to implement laws that regulate the sale of scrap metal.

The law would require dealers to keep a record of transactions for items over $25, include a description of the material and a photocopy of the sellers ID and not allow cash for sales of more than $1,000.

States across the map have been adopting these regulations to discourage the recent slew of scrap metal theft and fraud.
